ACTIVITIES
Steel forging demonstration
Details
A place suspended in time. An ancient art-form. Masterful craftsmanship. Come visit the only place in the world where iron is forged in the traditional Japanese way (Tatara forging).
Okuizumo Tatara Sword Museum keeps traditions alive as it passes down the history and culture of the iron industry in Japan to future generations. Come see the process and learn how the iron sand is transformed into a finished blade. Watch the local master Kobayashi bring his effervescent and sparkling charm to bring the twice monthly demonstrations to life.
Try your hand at wielding a hammer and working the red-hot metal in the small modern forge in the museum as he encourages members of the audience to help work the tamahagane (Japanese worked steel). Hold a real Japanese katana sword and take photos to your hearts content.
Highlights
•Experience a charming, private demonstration on how tatara is worked and quality Japanese blades are forged.
•See the action up close and personal as you work the bellows on the forge.
•Hold a real Japanese katana sword at the completion of the demonstration.
